ALB Field Trip by Diana

The field trip to the new Army Logistics Base (ALB), which is located at base in Choa Chu Kang, was held on 28 Nov 2008 from 1pm to 5pm. I was excited as it was my first time witnessing a warehouse operation in action.

The new logistics base features the latest
multi-storey warehouse architecture including an Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS), a Mobile Racking & Shelving system, a modern wireless radio frequency identity system, Automatic Guided Vehicles, and Vertical Carousels that optimizes storage space.

This intelligent system controls all warehousing and distribution management functions in the ALB which enables it to monitor stocks in the inventory and track consumption patterns and provide instant inventory updates. Thus, minimizing stock levels.

Not only did I learn about the various types of system controls, I also learnt that ALB uses a throughflow warehousing floor layout in which they have separate loading bay facilities for outbound and shipping at opposite ends of their warehouse.

The working environment at ALB caters to operator comfort, product preservation and equipment operation. The also maintain product security and warehouse operations safety.
